Icicles

Icicles

The last few weeks here in Glacier, WA,  the weather has brought us well over a foot of snow. The temperatures have dropped into the teens and 20’s many nights which has created beautiful icicles all over. It’s like a little winter wonder land up here right now. I spotted these icicles down on South Pass rd. (Aprx. 15 miles before Glacier)  a few days ago. My kids and I thought they were pretty neat!

Fresh Snow For Glacier!

Fresh Snow For Glacier!

The weather has been a bit on the dry and warmer side this winter here in Glacier, WA.

Mt. Baker Ski Area has still had a nice amount of snow, but it has really stayed up in the mountains for the most part. Today it snowed all the way down in Bellingham. Here in Glacier we had several inches of fresh snow! Temperatures are around 20 degrees, and forecasts are calling for the cold to stick around a little longer. Looks like we will be holding on to this snow for a bit! My kids were outside first thing this morning making little snowmen in their pajamas. They couldn’t wait to get their hands on it. We are loving it!

Mt. Baker Ski Area Expected to Open Wednesday Dec. 12th.

The Mt. Baker Snowfall forecast is expecting:

10” Sunday night (12/9/18)

20” Tuesday

13” Wednesday

24” Thursday

12” Friday

The ski area is  planning  to open three chairlifts starting this Wednesday December 12th as long as forecasts and snowfall stay on track.

Snowy Mt. Shuksan and Ski Area Weather Update

I had the opportunity to go for a little hike out to Grandmas up at Artist Point on Tuesday. The weather was beautiful and sunny, but very chilly! There’s still not very much snow at the lower Mt. Baker Ski Area Lodge also known as White Salmon Lodge, but when the snow starts falling it can happen quick and open in just a matter of days.

Forecasts are calling for around 11” next Tuesday (12/11/18), so hopefully it will keep coming and the ski area will be able to open soon! Until then….. if you are looking for something to do in the area, take some snowshoes or just some warm winter boots and enjoy hiking around Heather Meadows. It is absolutely gorgeous right now!

On Tuesday all the waterfalls were frozen solid and the ponds and lakes were freezing over too. The ice crystals were tall and amazing to look at. If you go up for a little day trip you won’t be disappointed!

When Will The Mt. Baker Ski Area Open for the 2018 Season?

When Will The Mt. Baker Ski Area Open for the 2018 Season?

The big question this time of year is always “when will the ski area open”?   Unfortunately that is completely up to the weather. Usually Mt. Baker opens Thanksgiving weekend, however this year there is not enough snow just yet. Forecasts are calling for a possibility of over 2 feet of snow in the next couple of days. If this happens the Mt. Baker Ski Area should be opening soon!

Check back here for the latest updates, or you can check out the official Mt. Baker Snow Report on the Mt. Baker Ski Areas website!

See you on the mountain soon!

Fall mushrooms

Fall mushrooms

Spotted these mushrooms growing up this old stump. I love all the mushrooms the Autumn season brings to Mt. Baker! This photo was taken in Snowater resort.

Fall colors at Mt. Baker

Fall colors at Mt. Baker

The fall colors are here at Artist Point. This is the best time of year for photographing the famous Picture Lake! These little red plants in the photo are wild mountain blueberries. They are abundant around Mt. Baker Ski Area, &  Artist Point. They cover the ground like a beautiful red, orange, and yellow marbled carpet. Come and check it out before the snow starts falling!

Mushrooms

Mushrooms

Autumn around Mt. Baker is the perfect time for mushroom hunting. Here in Glacier you can find both Chanterelle’s, & Morel’s. Right now the mushrooms are popping up everywhere, so it’s the perfect time to start hunting! However, mushroom hunting is best left to experts, as there are many poisonous varieties around Mt. Baker, and Glacier, WA, so if you don’t know exactly what you are doing you could end up with a look alike, or false Morel.

The ones pictured above are NOT edible, just beautiful to look at. There are many different varieties of mushrooms in the area, and they are all fun to photograph, so bring your camera and enjoy this beautiful sunny fall weather we are having!

My husband Kelsey took this gorgeous photo of the sunset up at Artist Point which is located at the end of the Mt. Baker Hwy up past the Mt. Baker Ski Area.

Beautiful Fall Hike up Winchester Mountain!

Beautiful Fall Hike up Winchester Mountain!

This photo is on the way up Winchester Mountain. This hike is my favorite one up here due to the fact that it has amazing views 180 degrees around once you reach the top, yet only takes an hour to an hour and a half depending on how fast you hike to complete. My kids (9 & 11) can also do it with no problems. It begins right in between the two twin lakes up at the top of Twin Lakes Rd.

The 3 Mountain peaks in the photo above are a unique little landmark for this area because they are on the line where Canada and America meet.

The three peaks that are all side by side together are as follows:              The farthest to the left is Canadian Border Peak, the middle is American Border Peak, and the one on the right is the beautiful Mt. Larrabee.

Fall is a perfect time for this hike! The wildflowers are in full bloom and the blueberries are still out.
